Amy

A deep, raw scream wakes me instantly. Lucifer is thrashing in his sleep, his red body covered with sweat. He’s like a furnace, heating up the entire tent.

“No, no!” He mumbles. “Get back! Get back!”

“Luc, wake up,” I say. I try to shake him. It’s like shaking a damn mountain.

“No!” He roars, his mouth open, his fangs glistening, his eyes rolling away. “My eyes!”

Seeing him like this is horrible. I don’t know what else to do, so I tap his cheeks. “Come on, big guy, wake up! You’re scaring me!”

Wrong move. The alien warrior grabs my arms instinctively and rolls on top of me, the other hand closing tightly around my neck.

Only then do his eyes open for real and do I make contact with him. There’s fear in his eyes, something I’ve never seen before. It dissipates in an instant.

“Amy,” he breathes, his broad chest heaving up and down. “It’s you.”

“You’re choking me,” I whisper.

“Sorry.” He lets go instantly and hugs my body tightly. “I never want to hurt you, little one.”

I rub his back and kiss the top of his head. “I know. You were having a bad dream. Do you want to talk about it?”

Lucifer closes his eyes. “I do not.”

“But would you feel better if you did?”

“Perhaps.”

“Then try, for me?” I ask.

Lucifer sighs deeply. “It was the visions. Have I told you about the vids? About what they did to me?”

“Bits and pieces,” I answer as my fingers draw circles on his rough, alien skin. “Tell me the whole thing.”

Lucifer takes another deep breath as he squeezes me, his massive body lying straight on top of mine.

“When I first gained consciousness, they… they trained me. Desensitized me. They showed me visions of war, of battle, of death. High definition video of all major wars, of terrorist attacks, of planetary raiders, of soldiers of every creed and color committing atrocities so fucked up I can’t begin to describe them, all beamed straight into my brain, as if I was right there.

“Sometimes, when I close my eyes, I can still hear the screams, smell the burning flesh, taste the…” His voice trails off, his body tensing up.

“It’s okay,” I say softly as I pat his back. “It’s okay. You’re here now, with me. None of that stuff is real.”

“It is real,” Lucifer answers. “Or it was. Humans can be so… cruel.”

“Now that’s true,” I say.

My big red guy looks up at me, his dark eyes filled with doubt. “Am I not a monster to you, Amy?”

“Of course not!” I say, resting my hands on his cheeks. “You’re my savior.”

To prove my point, I lean forward and kiss him right on his lips.

“What they did to you was awful,” I say, “but it’s none of your fault. Frost tried to traumatize you into being a monster, but you’re not. You’re sweet, and caring, and kind, and protective, and I can keep going if you like.”

“I could have hurt you just now,” he says softly. “You shouldn’t wake me when I’m like that, I’m not in… control.
